Living Well: Making Space for Spring (and Summer) Delightful Decluttering

Even after the fresh start that the new year gave us a few months ago, we can already begin to feel overloaded as we move into spring. Fortunately, “spring cleaning” isn’t just about preparing for summer. It’s also about clearing the mental and spatial clutter that’s keeping us from the goals we set for ourselves earlier in the year. To give your year a reboot, consider three key spaces to declutter and refocus:
Clear up your workspace
Remember that non-essential items compete for your attention, whether you use them or not. When you’re at your workplace, note your day-to-day items, your week-to-week items, and your only-when you-need-them items. After that store away anything that belongs in that last category. A cleared workspace lets you focus on the tasks at hand.
Declutter at home
There are many resources available to help you declutter your home (we’ve included some links below). Two simple tips we like:
- Firstly, when decluttering your home, work on one room at a time, setting aside time once a week to focus on organization and tidying.
- Secondly, don’t take decluttering to the extreme. If the Marie Kondo method doesn’t work for you, use the 6 month rule. If you haven’t used or viewed an item in 6 months, do you really need it? Even if the answer is “yes”, you’ll be farther ahead just by asking the question.

Clean out your digital space
If you spend time online, you know that it can get crowded and confusing quickly. Digital drives, email inboxes, the applications on your phones… all of these can quickly gang up on your concentration. Taking the time to do a little digital decluttering allows you to become more efficient and effective.
Now that you have decluttered your environment, you can focus on checking off those 2019 goals!
