Global Mental Health Awareness
World Mental Health Day takes place in October and although October 10th has passed, it’s important to continue providing knowledge and support in regards to this day. It’s an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against the social stigma surrounding mental health challenges.
On World Mental Health Day, we work to address social stigma, to encourage individuals to talk about their mental health, and to seek appropriate treatment and support.
Stigma and discrimination continue to be key barriers to social inclusion, understanding, and access to the necessary support for mental health. These barriers can further increase mental health issues, negatively impact recovery, and can decrease the likelihood of an individual seeking treatment.
Support in maintaining good mental health
Maintaining good mental health is crucial for our general health and overall well-being. Approximately one in every eight individuals worldwide struggle with mental health issues that can affect their physical health, relationships, sense of well-being, and ability to earn a livelihood.
Some ways to maintain good mental health can include:
Find purpose and meaning in your day
This can be different for everyone, but finding purpose in your day can play a big role in good mental health. Here are some things you can try:
- Participate in activities that you’re passionate about.
- Spend quality time with people who matter to you.
- Volunteer your time, which can help enrich your life and make you happier.
Make social connections a priority
- Spending quality time with people, especially those you love and who energize you, can be a powerful way to reduce stress and boost your mood.
Don’t be afraid to talk about it
- Talking to a friendly face can be an effective way to calm your nervous system and relieve stress. If you have any concerns, stresses or worries, sharing them with someone who cares can be helpful. On the other hand, listening to others in a safe and supportive way can also help you gain different perspectives.
