MANAGEMENT TEAM - ADVISORY BOARD
Our Advisory Board is responsible for the governance of GroupHEALTH and has specific duties related to finance, human resources, and administration. The Board is composed of Directors from outside the Company, plus the Founder and the President & CEO. The outside Directors come from Canada and the US and provide an important link to the various regions of the country.
Matt Houghton is the President & CEO of GroupHEALTH. He holds a degree in Business & Economics and has experience managing businesses throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico ranging from manufacturing through to financial services .
Prior to assuming a formal role with GroupHEALTH, Matt and the current Barrie operations team developed a niche benefits and wealth management practice, and were one of the first Ontario Partners. Matt found the product and value proposition at GroupHEALTH so appealing that he assumed a development role of Managing General Agent for Ontario, to assist in constructing a ‘Best in Class’ team of Partners. The Ontario operations merged with GroupHEALTH Global and Matt assumed the role of President and COO in 2009. Matt took over as President and CEO in 2013.
Howard Kettner is the Founder of GroupHEALTH. From humble beginnings in a 250 square foot office in Prince George, BC, in the early ’80s, Howard created WestPro Benefit Systems – the predecessor organization to GroupHEALTH – growing the company one satisfied client at a time while pioneering industry leading systems, processes and benefit plan solutions.
In 2005, Howard led the company on a new course of action in direct response to ongoing requests from other brokers and consultants wanting access to WestPro’s specialized services, products, and proprietary technology – implementing key changes over the following years that included rebranding WestPro to GroupHEALTH Global to reflect the company’s growing national presence and creating a network of local community-based Partner Affiliates from coast to coast that are committed to maintaining high standards of integrity, client responsiveness, and cost competitiveness.
Mark Sylvia is the President of Clarity Underwriting Managers. Mark began his insurance career in 1975. Prior to forming Clarity Underwriting Managers Mark was a senior executive at EGI Financial Holdings Inc., a company which over a period of over 10 years, he helped build from a small reinsurance intermediary in 1999 to a TSE listed Insurance Group providing property casualty, accident and health insurance and warranty products with operations in Canada, the United States and Barbados. During his tenure at EGI he was Chief Executive Officer of Echelon General Insurance Company, President of EGI Insurance Managers Inc., President and Chief Operating Officer of Trent Health Insurance Service Corp and Canadian Insurance Marketing Inc. which were affiliated companies of EGI Financial Holdings Inc.
From 1988 until 1999 Mark was President and Chief Executive Officer of Hartford Life Insurance Company of Canada an insurer specializing in the development of life insurance, accident and health insurance and Investment products focused on niche markets.
Mr. Sylvia has a wealth of industry specific knowledge and provides valuable insight on the Advisory Board of GroupHEALTH .
Charles R. Wood has been President and Chairman of the Board of Republic Packaging Corp. since its inception in September, 1961. His vision and leadership has helped Republic Packaging Corp. grow from an idea and a rented loft office to its current span of five operations in three countries.
As President and Chairman, he spends much of his time in leadership development, coaching and training the management at the five subsidiaries of Republic Packaging, providing direction for sales, operations, and their supporting functions to understand and meet their customers’ needs. Charles also owned an Insurance Agency in Cocoa Beach, Florida and a Temporary Employment Agency in Dallas, Texas. He has been a presenter at seminars on Managing Fast Growth for AMR International and other associations.
Prior to starting Republic Packaging, he worked as a salesman for Vanant Packaging, Dayton Rubber Company and the Conwed Corporation. He was also the Building Commissioner for the community of Palos Park, Illinois from 1973 to 1975, and was in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
Charles was a member of the Young Presidents Organization, and is a member of the World Presidents Organization International and the Chicago Chapter of the World Presidents Organization. He is a member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals, the Union League Club of Chicago, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Grace Christian Academy in Chicago.
He obtained his instrument rating as a pilot in 1969 and his twin engine license in 1971 and flew extensively around North America and the Bahamas. A physically active man, Charles enjoys golf, sailing, skiing and travel.
Charles believes his main responsibility is to help develop a better, more efficient way to manage people to make work more interesting, understandable and more effective for the company as a whole. This, if accomplished, will set the course for the company into the next decade.
Charles provides a client centered perspective to the GroupHEALTH Advisory Board.
Greg Rumble is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Contrans, one of Canada’s largest transportation organizations providing transportation services throughout Canada and the USA. Greg has held a number of senior roles with Contrans since 1988, and is currently a Director there.
Prior to joining Contrans, Greg held senior positions at King Equipment Manufacturing Corporation, Floyd Dunford Limited, and Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young LLP).
Greg has an honours degree in Business Administration from the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, and is qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
